Enjoying a weekend in Louisville, my friends (who had recently moved there) asked me where we should try for brunch. I had heard about Wild Eggs, but hadn’t had the chance to experience it yet, so we decided to give it a shot.
Since we went at 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning, I expected a long wait, and was pleasantly surprised when it was only thirty minutes, despite the line of people that went all the way out the door and down the side of the building. What wasn’t as pleasant: the parking situation. We ended up parking at a business a little ways over from the restaurant itself. Word to the wise: you probably want to drop off a couple people to get your name in and then go park the car, especially if you’re there on a weekend.
Once we got in, the menu is full of fun and original choices. There are all the standard breakfast options like eggs, french toast, pancakes, and then a bevy of less usual fare like breakfast nachos or eggs Benedict with a twist.
The coffee was diner-meh, which is to be expected, but the food was delicious. Between the four of us we got Kalamity Katie’s Border Benedict, Stuffed French Toast, the Farmer’s Market Skillet and the Zax I am Fried Eggs and… (bacon).
All the food was tasty, fresh, and cooked well, though I seem to remember the grits being mildly disappointing. The Border Benedict (below) is what stands out in my mind as hands-down amazing. The combination of the avocado and pico de gallo and the green chili cheddar corn cakes with two perfectly poached eggs in between was such a great combination of flavors. The everything muffin was a surprising treat that left me wanting the recipe. I feel like I’m running out of synonyms for yummy food. It was just so good.
Sometimes when you hear about places like this you feel like it can’t live up to the hype, but I was pretty satisfied when we walked out (if by satisfied you understand that I would have exploded if I ate another bite). Wild Eggs is a cute, sunny place, and it’s worth the wait, especially when that wait is only half an hour. I can’t wait to go back and try even more of their zany selections.
